Ae Fond Kiss

I rewatched Ae Fond Kiss recently for the first time since it came out back in 2004. I was very young then and didn’t have much life experience. There is something really special about repeating certain experiences, like rewatching movies or rereading books from a long time ago. Now that I have gone through life and seen more, a lot of things in the film really resonate with me, and the story just sits with me. You realize how much your worldview and tastes have evolved. I really love the Scottish accents in the movie now, which is something I just didn’t connect with back then. The film tells a love story between Casim, a second-generation Pakistani Muslim young man from a deeply conservative family, and Roisin, an Irish Catholic immigrant and schoolteacher in Glasgow, and what the society imposes on their lives through both strict Catholic rules and Muslim traditions.
