Loved this photo by Reza Nezamdoust. I don’t know when it was taken, but it shows two girls, probably in Hormuzgan Province, playing with a swirl-patterned plastic ball.
Everything about this photo is lovely to me. Hormuzgan is one of the underserved areas in Southern Iran, and life there is hard. That plastic ball is what kids — mostly boys — in the 70s–90s used to play with on dirt streets and alleys. The angulation of the camera is such that the girls’ privacy is respected. They are barefoot on the wet sand, kicking the ball, the wind catching their traditional dress like a bird with open wings. They are away from the hardship of daily life, away from everything expected of them, having a moment with the ball.
