The Snows of Kilimanjaro, from 1952 with Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner, was based on Hemingway’s story of the same name. Hemingway never liked the adaptation, yet the movie was a success at the box office.
My favorite scene from the movie is where Harry meets Cynthia at a party where everyone is showing off and trying to look very sophisticated. Harry is taken by surprise to hear that Cynthia is simply trying to be happy. That was mesmerizing to him.
Hemingway’s father committed suicide by gun, and Hemingway always looked at that as a cowardly action by his father, whose health was deteriorating. Oddly, many years after, Hemingway went the same way and took his own life when his own health was deteriorating. What an ill twist of fate.
